Number of Patients: Sauteurs 352, Grand Bras 364, St. Davids 308, Victoria 234

We referred 84 patients for cataract or pterygium surgery. The Rotary Club of Clarkston, MI (through Mary Sloan and Jeff Lichty) provided a generous grant to help purchase glasses and Jim Gwillim donated substantial funds for glasses and sunglasses. The Rotary Club of Grenada East provided the team with transportation, customs assistance, lunches, several dinners and an entertaining last evening, as well as support at each clinic site.

Total patient count was 1,479.  We distributed over 2,000 pairs of glasses.  We also disturbed 750 pairs of sunglasses and over 150 magnifiers and telescope to patients with visual impairments.  We also dispensed many therapeutic eye drops for glaucoma, infection, inflammation, allergic conjunctivitis and dry eye syndrome.  Our main referrals included glaucoma, cataract and diabetic retinopathy.  Not as many ptyergium were seen, but we did see toxoplasmosis, nystagmus, optic atrophy and achromatopsia.  In the Western Province of Kenya from 12/25/09 to 1/6/10 our team examined 1,739 Kenyans in the 5 days of clinic. Of that group, I estimate 1600 received reading glasses or prescription eyewear that we had with us. Another 8 patients has unusual prescription needs that we fabricated in the US and mailed to them from the US later in 2010. Among the 1739 patients we had approximately 65 cases of Glaucoma and 45 bacterial eye infections that we were able to treat. Each glaucoma patient received approximately 6 month supply of therapeutic prescription eye drops. Each of the glaucoma patients was instructed to seek follow-up care with optometry or ophthalmology. Approximately 40 patients were diagnosed with debilitating cataract in one or both eyes, and were referred to ophthalmology. The remote nature of our clinic work (about 6 hours drive west of Nairobi) makes it impossible to estimate how many of the patients referred were able to act on that referral.

I want to thank everybody involved with the program in Teacapan, Mexico. It was absolutely astonishing the amount of people in three countries and the man hours it took to put the program together. On our end..VOSH (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) it takes us hundred of man hours just to sort, neutralize (read the power of the lenses) and categorize the 7,000 pair of donated eye wear we brought down to Teacapan, Mexico. The official number of examination RX's that we counted including the ones the Lions Club printed up was 1,789. We were so busy that I know we did not collect all of the RX slips when the people came through the system so I rounded it off conservatively to 1800 patients during the three days of work. Plus we fitted 1,500 pair of brand new sunglasses and 150 pair of donated used ones totaling 1,650 pairs.

Working with my connection Linda Taylor at her home in Arizona and when she went to Teacapan weeks ahead of time and putting the team together here in Minnesota, I wrote 474 emails and received back 460 for a total 934 emails over a number of months. All the work everybody, everywhere did, proved with a tremendous amount of communication and working out logistics to the smallest detail, a eye care program could come together and accomplished everybody's goals. But the true winners and heros were the 1,800 people whom we had the privilege to serve.

I personally thank all the people in Canada, the United States and Mexico who made the mission to Teacapan a perfect success. I will forward this e-mail to our International office to put on their web site to encourage other state chapters to follow up with another eye-care program to Teacapan. Now that everybody is on board, it would be a breeze for another state to have a mission to Teacapan, Mexico.
