18 clinic personnel total, including 3 ODs (myself, Elisa Perreault from Albany and Lynne Grove from Mashpee) and 3 dentists. Lynne unfortunately had to leave midweek after experiencing a retinal detachment (preferred to return to the States than gamble with likely paying out of pocket for Salvadoran care, although we could have gotten her treated through Rotary connections if necessary). We saw 178 patients in 3 days in Apopa (3 ODs) and 129 in 2 days in Suchitto (2 ODs) for a total of 307 over 5 days.  About 310 pairs of prescription glasses and probably 250 nonprescription sunglasses given out, plus several multi-month supplies of glaucoma meds and loads of artificial tears samples.  9 eligible cataract patients were referred to a Paz Salud surgical group coming in May, and we are still working on finding future care for 9 glaucoma patients and 2 pterygium patients.

We were helped by the society of Farm Workers in Managua. we saw just under 1000 people with 3 practicing OD's working 5 days. OD's were Chris Fields, Jay Jordan and myself. Joe Crosby OD from Tennessee was on the trip as well. He contacted me from the INT website. He preferred to work dispensing.
I am planning another trip to San Carlos for 2012 just starting to get the plans set. Nicaragua has changed the airport routine. All bags are scanned now, so getting glasses, drops, etc in to the country will be more difficult now. I was able to get everything, lost bags, confiscated bags etc. because we were helped by the farm union leaders who had quite a bit of clout. I will definitely work with them again.

El Salvador trip update:  a.)Successful eye campaign, seeing more than 2000 patients and 140 surgeries completed. Emergency care was arranged for a 16 month old baby Rivera, who would become blind without intervention for his congenital cataracts and glaucoma.  An e-mail “blast” was sent globally and response was immediate.  A surgeon specialist was located and available to do free care, pharmaceutical supplies became available at no cost, etc.  (note: Successful surgery was completed in Guatemala for surgery. ASAPROSAR coordinated transportation and follow-up care).

We expect most of the group will fly into Knoxville or Tri-Cities Thursday night April 12th to participate in the clinic set up at The Bristol Motor Speedway on Friday April 13th.  Those unable to come for set up can arrive as late as Friday night.  We will have two very full clinic days on Saturday and Sunday with general medicine, optometry, dentistry, and audiology represented.  As in our past VOSH missions there will be a role for non-professional support staff and students.  Members can return home Sunday evening but there has been some discussion about possible R&R for a day at the end of the mission.

We will be hosted by RAM which is based in Tennessee and has years of experience doing domestic missions of this type.  We will be responsible for our transportation and housing but RAM will provide the meals.  We are looking into discounted hotel rates and vans or a bus.  Tennessee has license reciprocity so if you hold a current you are permitted to practice in a mission setting in Tennessee.  We have 38 members already signed up so if you are interested I ask you to write Sue Seidler at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and ask her to add you to the roster. This is a new experience for most of us so if you have questions please write me.
