NEWS

• Officers 2007-2008.

• AOA Board of Trustees appointed Dr Steve Loomis as liaison for 2007-2008.

• New chapters are VOSH-Lone Star Texas, School of Optometry University of Waterloo (Canada) and School of Optometry Universidad Nacional de la Plata (UNLP Argentina).

•  VOSH/International received a grant from Walman Optical Co to develop eye clinics and optical labs in Central America.

• VOSH/International received a grant from the Esther Kahn Foundation to provide equipment and training at educational and health care facilities in developing countries.

• VOSH/International partnered with IMEC, International Medical Equipment Collaborative to send containers of eye equipment to hospitals and educational institutions. For more information visit Technology Transfer Program.

• Seventy Four missions were reported in 2007.

• Three newsletters in 2007.

• Dr. Dale Cole, past president of VOSH/International was selected Kansas optometrist of the year 2008.

• Dr. Alfred Rosenboom of VOSH-Illinois was selected as the VOSH/International Humanitarian of The year 2007. Drs. Ann Edmonds, Bruce Moore, Patti Fuhr and Mr. Charles Covington Sr were designated as Fellow of VOSH/International (FVI); Dr Harry Zeltzer received a Lifetime Acheivement Award.

• Dr Jerry Vincent, International Relief Committee (IRC) discussed a topic summarized in the Nov 07 issue of the Optometric Physician Shifting from a Voluntary Clinical Approach to a Public Health Approach in Addressing Refractive Errors.

• NEWENCO study shows diminished use of children's sunglasses SEE POSTER Whitney Catanio and Matt Bauer.

•  The Impact of Uncorrected Refractive Error on Global Health, Larry Hookway, OD.

• Chapter leaders are asked to update their chapters by providing information regarding mission destination, mission leader /email and host.

• "The Netza School Project", a collaboration of Rotary and VOSH. Report

• Drs. Victoria and Douglas Weiss received the Fluvana Chamber of Commerce Award for community, national and international humanitarian work. Dr. Vicki Weiss is the president of VOSH-VA. News Report

• The International Centre for Eye Care Education (ICEE) hosted the Inaugural World Congress on Refractive Error and Service Development from 14 - 16 March 2007 in Durban, South Africa. VOSH/International was represented by President Dr. Ruth McAndrews and Dr. Patti Fuhr who was a featured speaker.

• Father Pierre Labine, President of VOSH-Santa Cruz Quebec was interviewed Jan 5, 2007 on CBC Canada.

• VOSH/International sent a 40 ft container of diagnostic instruments and eyeglasses to affiliated optometry schools in Ghana, Jan 23, 2007....arrived April 14, 2007.

• Permitted and prohibited carry-ons still in effect.

• *VOSH/INTERNATIONAL SOUNDED NASDAQ BELL TO COMMEMORATE WORLD SIGHT DAY

• NAME CHANGE: VOSH-NECO is now VOSH-ONE to avoid conflict with NECO, refering to the New England College of Optometry. President is Derrick Feifke, OD. Among other acheivements, Dr Feifke is a regular Boston Marathon runner raising funds for VOSH.

• VOSH-SOS (Peru) is taking part in a major illiteracy program supported by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, INO (National Ophthalmology Institute), Lions Club , Loayza Hospital and local practitioners. Seventy seven thousand patients, were expected to be examined in 2007.

• REIMS program for sorting eyeglasses is gaining popularity. System was used in August by faculty and students from The New England College of Optometry in El Salvador. Other chapters using system are Alabama, Northeast, Iowa, Ohio, PA, Northeast, Northwest and Virginia. About co-inventors Skip Charles and the late Dr. Phil Richmond visit the REIMS website and ask questions REIMS Q & A.

• President Ruth Mc Andrews was a featured speaker at the Commencement of the Inter American University of Puerto Rico School of Optometry in June 2007.

• In the Journal of Optometric Education (JOE) "Optometrists for the 21st Century" mentioned VOSH and its work promoting ethical behavior. The article by Hector Santiago was reprinted in the Journal The Advisor which is the official journal of the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP). Link.

• The fall issue of The Indiana Journal of Optometry featured Doug Horner and the VOSH clinic in Mexico.

• Dr Doug Horner's history of the Indiana University clinic/hospital in Guanajuato, Mexico

•  AOA recognized two VOSH ODs as Optometrists of The Year, Dr. Gary Pederson of Nebraska and Dr. Marsha Swanson of Alabama.

• Dr Dale Cole, Past President of VOSH/International was featured in July issue Better Health and Living.

• Dr Doug Villella was featured...visit "visions in the rain forest" HER Times.

• VOSH/International congratulates Larry Hansen, OD Univ of Waterloo on his apppointment as CEO of IAPB.

• Dr Ann Quimby cited for her work in Nicaragua with VOSH-Ct in the The Wilton Bulletin
