SUPPORTING INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS OF OPTOMETRY

VOSH-NECO and ASAPROSAR donated, a slit lamp and trial lens set to the new school of optometry in San Salvador, Jan 27, 2007.
L to R, Drs. Natalia Colome, Vicki Guzman, Gwynn M. Horsburgh, Harry Zeltzer
VOSH-International donated equipment and hospital supplies to the two schools of optometry in Ghana. The 40 foot container results from a partnership with the WCO, Rotary Clubs, Luxottica, Essilor and private sources. It departed from World Medical Relief, Detroit, Michigan and arrived at KNUST on June 1, 2007
VOSH-Ohio donated a phoropter to the Universidad Nacional de La Plata Facultad de Ciencias Exactas,La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Nov 2006 Drs. Jorge Cheruse and Larry Hookway, President Elect of VOSH/International. A pipe set up improvised by VOSH-Illinois.... It has a machined end that fits into the refractor on one end and the other end is a 1/2 " galvanized pipe that can be attached to any other pipe fitting. Then they took a Tee fitting and removed the threading on the inside so that it would slide over the outside of a 1/2 pipe. That fitting can be raised and lowered so that the refractor can be adjusted. You just have to raise up on the refractor and you can move the Tee up and down, thenwhen you release the weight of the refractor the Tee binds and it stays in place. It works fairly well, and is cheap. You do have to be careful or you will get a blood blister (if your hand is too close to the Tee when you move it.). You really have to see how it works. It is much cheaper than the Morrell stand so I took it Argentina. We also have a Morrell stand which is better but very heavy.
Dr. Ruth McAndrews, guest speaker at the commencement exercise of The Inter American University of Puerto Rico, School of Optometry, June 2007
